It aimed to sensitise the population of Stone Town (the old part of Zanzibar City) on the importance of its historical heritage and the preservation of its architectural patrimony.
ACRA trained Stone Town inhabitants in the traditional building techniques in masonry, painting, carpentry needed for the restoration of Stone Town, as well as in tourist guiding, without forgetting to raise awareness for youth in schools.
With Marta Carrascosa for the texts, we did a report on women and men participating in Stone Town conservation, as well as on buildings in poor condition.
As a photographer, it seemed equally essential to me to highlight individuals and families living in these collapsing buildings, who have known Stone Town at the height of its splendour.
From this collaboration, a book « Stone Town - a heritage to save » was published.
Multiple exhibitions were organised in Stone Town and Dar es Salaam, and outdoors to be seen by a large public.
